Self Management Long Term Conditions, Carers and Older People
This programme offers a range of activities/initiatives that will help improve health and wellbeing, give opportunites to learn new skills and make new friends and is open to older adults, those with a long term condition and carers.
SHAWL Group (Supporting Holistic, Arts and Wellbeing Locally)
It is well documented that relaxation is very therapeutic and helps the body to maximise its own healing abilities. The SHAWL group have several trained volunteers who offer Holistic therapies such as Reiki, Tai Chi for Health, indian Head Massage and Mindfulness. All our volunteer facilitators have themselves a long term condition. In addition, monthly coffee mornings are held with presentations on areas such as health and wellbeing and benefits advice. The group meet on Tuesdays at the Coronation Day Centre, Whitson Avenue, Stranraer from 10.30 until 12.30.
There is also an Art group which meet on Thursdays at the Coronation Day Centre from 10.30 until 12.30 and the group benefit from the expertise of local artist, William Neal.
Food Health/Food Life - Wellbeing Rhins Project
Facilitated by a Building Healthy Communities volunteer and incorporating Living Life to the Full approaches, this programme has classes for both men and women and includes day to day approaches to food and health as well as shopping and food preparation. In addition, a vegetable box scheme is also currently running with produce purchased from a local grower. These classes run on Mondays at Apex Offices, Backrampart, High Street, Stranraer from 2pm.
Tai Chi For Health
Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is an effective exercise for health of mind and body and with knowledge and skill it can be easy to learn and soon delivers its health benefits. There are two types of Tai Chi, one for arthritis and one for diabetes and both are delivered by our fully trained volunteers. Each one hour session consists of a series of warm-up exercises, Tai Chi form and cool down exercises.
Chair Based Exercise
Our Chair Based Exercise classes, delivered in partnership with Leisure and Sport, offer both beginners and advanced sessions in Stranraer and Glenluce and it is hoped that these will be available soon in Sandhead serving the south rhins. These low impact exercises are designed for anyone to improve mobility, flexibility, fitness and muscular strength.
Art for Health
A region wide programme in partnership with Access Arts delivering structured sessions on a vast range of art methods
West Wigtownshire Tambourelli
Tambourelli is a game for all ages and levels of fitness. It is similar to badminton but it is play with a round hand held canvas bat similar to a tambourine.
Tambourelii Coaching - West Wigtownshire Tambourelli Coaching Team provide a 10 week FREE coaching programme for schools and local community youth clubs delivering on the Scottish Government 'Alternative Sports for School Policy.' This provides young people with the opportunity to try a new sport in school. Community Volunteers and school support Staff can be trained to enhance the opportunity to play Tambourelli both in a school and after school setting.
Tambourelli Club - The Club meets every Friday evening (school term) at the Ryan Centre from 6.45pm - 8.15pm for Junior members (7-11 years) and 6.45pm - 9.00pm for 12 years and over (including adults). This is a FREE activity so why not come along and have some fun, make new friends and keep fit at the same time.
